Cultural Spotlight

The Vision Quest Virtual Conference is coming up next week! The two-day event is being presented October 20-21, and will be available for 30 days on demand for registered delegates.

Highlights include keynote presentations by award-winning singer/songwriter Susan Aglukark and entrepreneur and author Kendal Netmaker, ten workshops for professional, community and personal development including a youth stream of sessions, entertainment by some of Manitoba’s best Indigenous musicians, and cultural performances by:

Nikki Komaksiutiksak

An Inuit woman from Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut, Nikki Komaksiutiksak is the executive director with Tunngasugit Inc. which is Western Canada’s first Inuit Resource Centre. Though Winnipeg is now her home, Nikki has found the strength to preserve her ‘Inukness’ living in the southern part of Canada. She is an active member with the Inuit community in Winnipeg, and uses her knowledge and understanding of the south to assist other Inuit moving to the big city. Nikki is an experienced throat singer, teacher of Inuit history and culture, and a heartfelt musical performer.

Walking Wolf Singers and Dancers

Led by Ray Co-Co Stevenson, Walking Wolf Singers and Dancers was established over 20 years ago. They not only perform but also educate people about native song and dance. Walking Wolf Singers and Dancers are a group who also promotes pride in who and what we are as native people. They have released seven albums throughout the years, the latest is titled Walking Wolf Singers – Giving Thanks (2018).

Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers

Mikey Harris is an Indigenous dancer and choreographer from Winnipeg, and the leader of Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers. He specializes in his own unique style mixing traditional Métis jigging with hip hop, and has performed professionally across North America for 14 years at events such as the 2010 Winter Olympics, New Year’s celebrations on Parliament Hill, and the Indigenous Music Awards. Mikey is the co-director of Ikigai Collective, and has trained in LA, New York, Toronto, Detroit and Calgary. He continues to work on his craft and pursue his dream of dance.
